For this reason, we here at Elite Dental of Natick specialize in a wide variety of cosmetic treatments designed to get your smile back on track. One of the most common, easy, and cost-effective treatments is a procedure known as dental bonding.

When Do We Recommend Cosmetic Bonding?

Dental, or cosmetic bonding, maybe the best way to restore the structure and aesthetics of a damaged tooth. This time-tested procedure involves a putty-like substance, known as composite resin, which can be shaped and textured to match the appearance of natural enamel. The composite resin, which is also color-matched to the shade of your enamel, literally “bonds” to the tooth, making it virtually indistinguishable from the rest of your smile.

We may recommend dental bonding to:
•  Repair a structurally damaged or decayed tooth
•  Repair a chipped, cracked, fractured, or otherwise broken tooth
•  Whiten the appearance of the tooth with intrinsic stains or discolorations
•  Close the space between gapped teeth
•  Change the appearance of an abnormally-shaped tooth
•  Protect the root of a tooth after gum recession
•  Make a small or short tooth appear bigger or longer

Bonding Procedure

The bonding procedure, which can be completed in a single appointment, requires little or no preparation. We will begin the procedure by using a shade guide to select a composite color that best matches your existing tooth. Next, we will remove any decayed tooth material (if necessary), and etch the enamel. A rougher surface helps the composite better bond to the tooth.

We then apply a conditioning liquid to the tooth, which also aids in the bonding process. After the tooth has been properly cleaned and dried Dr. Bethany Polnar will apply the composite. The composite resin will then be molded and shaped until we achieve the desired effect. Once we are satisfied with the shape and size, we use an ultraviolet curing light to harden the material and expedite the bonding process.

We may need to trim excess composite to achieve the proper fit. We do not want your bonded tooth to cause any problems with your bite. After we achieve the perfect fit, we will polish the material until it matches the shine of your natural enamel. The entire process typically takes about 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the complexity of your situation.

Caring for a Bonded Tooth

After your procedure, we will give you a detailed set of care instructions. Bonded teeth are fairly durable but require some special considerations. Daily brushing and flossing, along with regular checkups and dental cleanings, can drastically improve the longevity of your bonding.

If the days and weeks following your procedure, be sure to reach out if you notice any sharp edges or a strange feeling when you bite down. We may need to repair or replace your bonding. With the proper care and maintenance, your bonded tooth could last upwards of 10 years!

We also recommend limiting your exposure to pigment-heavy beverages like coffee, wine, and teas. Much like your natural enamel, composite resin can stain over time. We also specialize in preventive care, as part of our holistic approach to dentistry. During your initial appointment, be sure to talk with Dr. Bethany Polnar if you have any questions or concerns.
