Placing a Dental Crown

The dental crown procedure is usually broken up into two or three appointments. During the first appointment, Dr. Bethany Polnar will prepare the tooth. To accommodate the size and shape of a crown, the underlying tooth must be completely reshaped. This includes the removal of both decayed and healthy enamel.

Once the enamel is properly prepared, we will take an impression of the tooth. Over the next few weeks, our dental technicians will use this impression to fabricate your final dental crown. In the meantime, we may place a temporary restoration to protect the tooth.

At a follow-up appointment, we will remove your temporary, and place your final crown. Before the crown is cemented into place, we may need to check the margins and make last-minute adjustments. A properly fit crown prevents problems with your bite and improves aesthetics.

Care and Maintenance of a Dental Crown

After we place your crown, Dr. Bethany Polnar will give you a set of care instructions. Most crowns, regardless of type, can be treated just like your natural teeth. However, we also suggest paying special attention to the tooth during your daily oral hygiene regimen. Crowns can sometimes trap bacteria and plaque underneath the appliance, especially with poor brushing and flossing techniques.

Besides brushing and flossing every day, regular visits to our office are a must. Most people should receive exams and cleanings about twice a year. Your appointments are also an excellent opportunity to ask questions and voice concerns.
