Exams

a dental chair like the ones at Elite Dental of Natick One of our primary goals here at Elite Dental of Natick is preventing dental problems before they occur. One of the best ways to accomplish this goal is routine examinations. Regular exams and cleanings are a vital part of maintaining proper dental hygiene for both children and adults. If you want to protect your family’s oral health, be sure to schedule checkup examinations about twice a year, roughly every six months.

Preventing Dental Problems with Exams

The purpose of a dental exam is to gather a more comprehensive understanding of your oral health. Regular exams allow us to catch potential problems in their earliest stages, and point out areas of concern that require special attention during your daily hygiene routine. People that have the most to gain from routine exams are those at a greater risk for tooth decay, gum disease, and other dental problems.

Tooth decay and gum disease, the two most common oral health problems, are easier to prevent and diagnose with comprehensive examinations. Catching these issues early on also helps prevent them from developing into major complications. This can save you a significant amount of time and money on restorative procedures. Ultimately, we want our patients to achieve and maintain healthy and beautiful smiles.

What to Expect During Your Exam

Generally speaking, we preform exams to:
•  Assess your oral and overall health
•  Assess your risk of tooth decay, gum disease, bone issues, and root decay
•  Check your jaw and bite for potential problems and misalignments
•  Assess your need for restorative treatments or tooth replacements
•  Assess your need for professional fluoride treatment
•  Demonstrate the proper brushing and flossing techniques, highlighting areas that may be problematic in the future

Dental exams are usually split into visual and physical components. During the visual part of your exam, Dr. Bethany Polnar will take a look at your teeth, gums, and other soft tissues in and around your mouth. During the physical part of your exam, we may feel around these same areas for any abnormalities, such as lumps, lesions, and immobile tissues. For these reasons, exams often double as oral cancer screenings, which are largely precautionary.

Your comprehensive exam may also involve the use of advanced diagnostic tools and technology. The most common of which are digital x-rays, CBCT scans, and 3-D imaging technology like intraoral scanners. These tools help us gain a better, more detailed understanding of the relationship between your teeth, gums, underlying bone, and TMJ (jaw).

What Happens After Your Exam?

What happens after your exam depends on the current status of your oral health. In many cases, an exam is followed by a professional cleaning, where we remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria deposits. Professional cleanings can also drastically reduce your risk of tooth decay and gum disease.

If we do diagnose any problems during your exam, the next step is treatment planning. Dr. Bethany Polnar will review your treatment options and determine which one is most suitable for your situation. Be sure to ask questions and voice concerns. Staying educated can improve your oral health and overall experience during restorative treatment.
